Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by her mother, her grandmother, and her godparents. Her father left her family. In her early years, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to the word association. Ford began to be interested in acting at the age of teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a few weeks, she realized it was not for her. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get the position on her 4th application. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford was not able to complete her degree in 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her debut on television in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. During the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate was a regular performer on stage as well as a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. However, Tate quickly began gaining recognition for her stand-up comedic performances that she incorporated into her show in 1996.
