Belknap is from Damariscotta in Maine. Belknap is the daughter of David Belknap, and Louise Belknap. She attended Lincoln Academy, Newcastle Maine. While a student at Middlebury College (Vermont), she began to become fascinated by the performing arts. Then she attended the American Conservatory Theater earning a Master of Fine Arts degree.
